fireplace wall in transition

I had your typical stucco fireplace with zero charm and about 4 total inches of mantel space. This was definitely a decide-as-you-go project and evolved as time, materials, and space allowed.

after we moved in, I painted the top and we had a mahogany cabinet built in. I just didnt like how dark it was, and that it housed the giant TV.
