Nautical painting makeover

I am in the process of making my livingroom sort of nautical with lots of white and blues. I had a little painting grouping above the chair rail which will some day turn into board and batten (my original intent) but it was a little lopsided. I happened to find this cool painting which looked perfect for that wall but it was very gold, and slightly 70's looking. I bought it anyway and thought maybe I could dig out my oil paints and fix it up. I am not an artist but I figure anyone can paint a sky right?
