I have been asking my mom to hold on to this dresser for me for nearly 15 years. I always remembered it upstairs in a closet. I finally had my brother bring it down to me after a trip home and I started thinking about what to do. I happen to know it was stored in my grandfathers old shop which was home to many mice, spiders and other creepy crawlies.I would probably have left it yellow if not that reason. If I were going to put it in my house I knew I wanted to strip it, and possibly paint it. The amazing surprise was that when I applied the orange stripping goo I just slid that yellow paint off and under it was my FAVORITE 50's turquoise! Yes it was not in great shape but I love the patina and the layers of paint that I know my grandma applied over the years. Now it's a little piece of history sitting in my dining room and I love it.
Before...yellow...dingy and partially stripped:
I might have just stripped the hardware except it was a really gold brass color underneath so I opted for white sprayed lightly with turquoise.
And after..in all it's aged glory.
I love Dorothea Lange's photography. I have this framed picture called "Migrant Mother" which reminds me that times may be hard but as a mother I am darn lucky to have the life I have and things could always be worse!
